Palace of stars / Patricia Lakin - New York Tambourine Books 1993

Anxious for little Will to look nice for the end-of-school party, his mother drops him off at the barber shop to have his hair cut. Clearly reluctant, Will brightens considerably when he spots the hairdo of his dreams in a magazine. The barber gamely cuts and sprays until Will sports a weird topknot on his mostly bald head. The boy is pleased, his mom is resigned, the barber is relieved, and the kids at the party are all agog to hear about his remarkable haircut. A delectably comical picture book on a subject that's fraught with anxiety for children, this has such narrative clarity of illustration that it could have been a wordless book. However, the simple text offers the chance to share the book's innocent wit and charm by reading it aloud to children as well as sharing its well-drawn, line-and-watercolor artwork. Try it before the end-of-school party, or before a haircut, or anytime a story hour needs a short, funny book to round out the program.
