| General note | This book represents the translation of the author?s structural steel design and construction-support experience, acquired over the better part of four decades of professional services in the United States of America, in the shape of a practical text book based on the curricula of the Indian engineering schools, the Indian Standards and Codes of Practice and his own perception of the needs of the Indian engineering students and practicing professionals. This experience has been supplemented by his many years of teaching structural analysis and design at Aligarh University, as well as his interaction with students, teachers and engineering professionals during his many visits to India. During his career, the author has served as a senior structural design professional in several highly reputable international engineering design and construction firms in the USA. He has presented a well-organized, balanced and practical blend of theory and practice of steel structural design in the book. It incorporates sufficient theory for the readers to feel comfortable with the complexities of steel design, and then presents a large number of design problems of different types and difficulty with a pronounced practical bias, in order to familiarize the reader with what he can expect to encounter in the design office as well as in the field. Indeed, the emphasis on practical design forms a very important integral part of the book. The fundamental building blocks of steel design are presented in the chapters on Structural Fasteners, Tension and Compression Members, Beams etc. More advanced and challenging design concepts and problems are thereafter presented in chapters on Multistorey Building Frames, Industrial Buildings, Plastic Analysis and Design, Water Tanks, Chimneys, Gantry Girders, Light Gauge Steel Structures etc. The example problems are carefully designed to illustrate the use of the relevant theory and Indian Standards and Codes of Practice in a comprehensive way. Written in an easy, systematic and concise style, the book incorporates a wealth of information, including expanded Steel Tables of Indian Rolled Sections, to enable the students as well as the practicing professionals to hone their skills of structural steel design and detailing.
