| General note | Global literature in libraries (GLLI), a new initiative spearheaded by translators and advocates for translation, has been established with the goal of increasing awareness of international literature within the library community, with a special emphasis on contemporary fiction. Wide international distribution alone is not a sufficient condition for attributing works to World literature. The decisive factor is an exemplary artistic value and the influence of the respective work on the development of humankind and science in general and on the development of the literature of the World in particular. Mapping World literature provides a particularly innovative approach to the field...(Thompsen's) concept of the constellation provides a model of reading that permits proximity to individual texts, whilst ensuring acknowledgement of the challenges of the potentially global scale of world literature...The Global literature in libraries initiative strives to raise the visibility of world literature for adults and children at the local, national and international levels. We intend to do so by facilitating close and direct collaboration between translators, librarians, editors and publishers because we believe translators are uniquely positioned to help librarians provide support and events to engage readers of all ages in a library framework that explores and celebrates literature from around the World. This book would be of great interest to students and scholars of literature as well as to general readers. |
