After Andrew Jessup--who lived in the house next door--moves away, a child must deal with new neighbour Madeline Havenblower--and possibly a new best friend. By the author of A Proper Little Lady.
Ages 5-8. Best friends are precious, and that's exactly what Andrew Jessup was. Andrew was a friend who took interest in his best friend's hobbies, helped him wash the dog, and was a perfect companion at the zoo. But since Andrew moved away, his best friend is sure that no one will be able to take Andrew's place. Then a new kid moves into Andrew's old house, and a new friendship evolves. This is a sensitively written account of a situation many children face sooner or later. The author and illustrator keep a sense of humor about the proceedings, as when a slick, gold-toothed real-estate salesman shows Andrew Jessup's house to one family after another. At the same time this on-target story shows exactly how important best friends are to boys and girls.
