This book is a supplementary text for either one- or two-semester general biochemistry courses. Selected parts of the book can also be used for more specialized courses. While the book is designed primarily for students of biochemistry, it serves students majoring in related fields such as chemistry, biology, and allied health curricula as well. The book was written in response to a need encountered during my many years of teaching biochemistry. I have found that students, both undergraduate and graduate, while having had some exposure to topics in the three broad areas of dissociation, kinetics, and energetics, consistently required considerable strengthening in these areas. Grasp of basic concepts needed to be reinforced, simple mathematical calculations had to be explained, and application of this material to biochemical systems was achieved with great difficulty. The book serves as a companion to general biochemistry texts in use. It can be used in either a one- or a two-semester course sequence, and for either undergraduate or graduate students, since each topic is discussed in detail, progressing from basic concepts to advanced material and special biochemical aspects. The depth to which a particular topic is covered can be adjusted by the instructor and/or the student by including or excluding certain sections of the book.
